The Rake

To be truly rakish you have to exude a certain level of confidence that transcends societal norms. The term ‘rake’ conjures up images of John Hamm’s hugely convincing corner smile or Charles Dance levels of sartorial sophistication – both of which have graced the cover of The Rake magazine, who are our latest collaborators.

The Rake x Orlebar Brown capsule collection combines louche elegance with mid-century cool. With a nod to classic sartorial styling, the collection features a range of pieces that are inspired by the Riviera. Using the quintessential poolside fabric towelling on key pieces and white piping for dapper flair, this collection also includes an exclusive Slim Aaron’s photographic edition Bulldog swim short.

We spoke to our friends at The Rake to pin down the impressive characteristics that one requires to be known as a rake.

What does it take to be a RAKE?

The rake is a man of supreme taste, perspicacity and decency. He’s culturally aware, a true aesthete and appreciates the finer things in life, whether that be the extraordinary commitment that the world’s most talented artisans make to creating clothes and accessories of the finest quality, a fine wine, or the truly elevated service at one’s favourite restaurant or hotel. He’s open to new experiences, he combines a roguish edge with a sense of uncompromising self-respect and ultimately respect for others. He is driven and successful, but never in spite of his own sense of self-fulfilment. He is, above all, a gentleman but crucially he never shouts about it. He’s the man we make our magazine for.

Three key accessories every Rake should take to the beach/on holiday

A very good gin martini, a Ramon Allones Gigantes cigar and a rubber ring.

Where would the Rake wear this collection?

The Capri Palace, Capri. The island itself is paradise and the hotel only reinforces this impression, both aesthetically and experientially. The Marbella Club is quite obviously iconic and genuinely luxurious, so much so that the image taken from our Orlebar Brown & The Rake printed swim shorts was originally taken at the Marbella Club by Slim Aarons. Finally, we’d suggest one wears our capsule collection at the Hotel du Cap in Cannes, for what is quite simply the quintessential riviera destination. It’s the ideal place for strolling along the beach in your towelling blazer and chambray linen shirt with a cigar of an evening.

How do you keep your cool in the sun?

Avoid it at all costs, or else have a myriad of retainers with giant fans in attendance. One should have a significant bevy of iced drinks on hand at all times. Alternatively one might try to wear a superfino panama hat and suits cut in the finest tropical weight fabrics; The Rake recommends Vitale Barberis Canonico two-ply and mohair, or else Fox Brothers crisp lightweight worsted – if you’ve not got an Orlebar Brown towelling blazer to hand that is (which you should).

What would you never leave home without?

A corkscrew and a pocket book filled with Oscar Wilde quotes.

What’s the most rakish form of travel?

Probably a Riva yacht, so long as it’s equipped with a top hi-fi and a well stocked bar. Every Riva yacht now comes with a copy of The Rake, which isn’t a bad endorsement.
