The vibrant aesthetic of the beachfront and pier helped see it crowned as the ‘8th most Instagrammed location in 2016’ —a fitting image for our classic Bulldog swim shorts. The pier itself was first built back in 1909 and it has accrued a rich history over the years. A popular spot for families and romantics it was home to the world’s largest ballroom, La Monica, for many years and its yacht harbour had the likes of Charlie Chaplin moored in the bay. Many also believe the pier to be the true birthplace of Popeye and cite Olaf C. Olsen, a charismatic, corncob-pipe-smoking fisherman based on the pier, as the model for the Popeye’s aesthetic.
After surviving the war, a number of takeovers and devastating storms the pier was reinvigorated in 1990 and, with the addition of the Pacific Park amusements in 1996, took shape as the iconic landmark we know today. Located at the end of the historic Route 66, Santa Monica offers gorgeous views of the Pacific and you’ll be hard pushed to find better sunsets on the West coast.
