This tiny South American nation is tucked neatly in-between Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. With the Caribbean sea and south Pacific on either side, dense rain forest, active volcanoes and exotic animals, landing in Costa Rica can feel a bit like being airdropped into a bizarre forgotten world. The stunning diversity of the flora and fauna suggests you might want to pack a few different colour ways of our Wooster Bulldogs. However, its Costa Rica’s 700 miles of coastline that make it a truly magnificent destination. World class surf is neither few nor far between and while monster waves aren’t a common sight, consistent, quality breaks framed by stunning, dramatic surroundings certainly are (oh, and there’s perfect weather year-round, too).
Guanacaste is where Costa Rica’s pacific coastline offers the pick of the country’s surf spots. Among Gunanacaste’s beaches, Playa Negra and Playa Grande (near Tamarindo) are the stand out breaks. Playa Negra breaks over a shallow lava reef, producing fast waves better suited to more advanced surfers. Playa Grande is good for both beginners and experienced surfers alike with ideal conditions almost all year round.
The best place to stay is the elegant and discreet boutique hotel Capitán Suizo. Turn up the offer of a room in the main hotel building and go for one of their luxury mini-villas hidden away in the hotels’ extravagant tropical garden.
A long day’s surf will no doubt have you rasping for a drink, so sample a little homemade “Guaro”. Distilled from fermented sugar cane, a little similar to vodka and usually drunk with water and lemon, Guaro is potent stuff so don’t head back into the waves after you’ve had one or two (or three or four).
