What makes Berlin so special is that it can be appreciated, even on the smallest budget. A popular location during the Summer are the city’s flea markets, of which there are many. One market that has remained unspoiled over the years is situated in the Mauerpark right next to Prenzlauerberg. Here you can find true treasures that were once long buried in the basements of the locals.
Berlin has countless street cafés and restaurants, but not all its gems can be found in the concrete jungle. One example is Patio, a converted houseboat, that is beautifully situated on the river Spree. On a Summer’s evening you can enjoy the gentle sway and a cocktail on the sundeck of this world class restaurant.
For the more ‘down to earth’ but still close to the water, a burger and chips Ankerklause on Maybachufer,is always a popular choice.
For Berlin, summer is all about being outside and enjoying that unique and special Berlin vibe.
Along the river Spree, you will find deckchairs and beach bars where you can relax with a drink whilst watching the boats go by. After sunset, there is no need to go home, as many of the cities famous clubs are situated on nearby boats.
Another Berlin classic is lake Wannsee, situated west of the centre. It’s the closest get-away from buzzy urban life and a perfect refreshment from the Berlin heat.
Things heat up literally during Berlin’s sporting summer season and it hosts a number of big sporting events, including the famous Berlin Marathon.
The first highlight of the seaason is the final of the German Football Cup, which this year will take place on the 12th of May in the Olympic stadium. The final this year will witness the showdown of two of Germany’s best teams of this year, record cup winners Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund.
In a colourful, creative and multicultural city like Berlin it gets hard to choose sometimes, which festival to go to or which exhibition to visit.
What is sure, is that you should’t miss the yearly Carnival of Cultures, that hits the area of Kreuzberg every June, leading into a four day street party with music and dance from performers and visitors from all party of the world. The Carnival celebrates Berlin’s diverse and tolerant atmosphere, that makes it so easy to feel at home, even if you are there just for the weekend.
