Perfect for the discerning international jet setter, The Havana Film Festival is Cuba’s annual festival promoting Latin-American, Caribbean and Spanish language cinema. Hosted in theatres across Havana, the festival takes in a broad range of films (both long and short) as well as documentaries, animation and the “Made in Cuba” category that offers an insight into the vibrant day-to-day life of Cuban citizens. Ideal for culture aficionados who enjoy exotic hidden gems as well as good rum on the rocks, The Havana Film Festival provides an electrifying and unusual winter festival experience. Despite the festival being held in December, Cuba’s tropical climate provides an average temperature just under the 30 degrees centigrade mark.
In between films make sure you head to La Bodeguita del Medio – the bar in which to sample a Mojito. The former hangout of Ernest Hemingway, it’s best sampled in the evening once the tourist crowds from Varadero have headed back out of the city. Street food is also very popular in Havana, particularly around the Paseo de Martí (locally nicknamed “The Prado”) where traditional Cuban “Criolla” (an aromatic mix of spanish and afro-Caribbean cuisine) dishes are available for very reasonable prices. Havana is an iconic city where the history is almost palpable. Vintage cars are common place, palm trees shade the streets and crumbling neoclassical architecture sits next to chic Art Deco buildings.

Hotel Ambos Mundos – One of Ernest Hemingway’s favourite haunts, this cosy hotel was built in the 1920s and stands out because of its eclectic 20th-Century facade and interesting history.
The “Made in Cuba” section of the festival will offer unique films that you won’t experience anywhere else. The festival’s diverse selection of films mean that there is always something on offer for everyone.
