Founded in 2010, the BLUE Marine Foundation has set the target to solve one of the largest problems on earth. To fight the far-reaching crisis in the oceans, BLUE creates case-by-case solutions through public-private partnerships. These partners are businesses and individuals who feel commited to the sea environment. BLUE functions as a platform to promote their environmental credentials.
BLUE pursues the specific ojective of increasing the area of protected ocean in form of marine reserves clearly over the next ten years. By buying back assets theoretically in common ownership, but in practice being exploited by vested interests, the BLUE Marine Foundation aims to unlock more of the ocean’s conservation value.
BLUE is the legacy project of our film on overfishing – The End of The Line. We were delighted when it recently won the 2011 PUMA Creative Impact Award for the documentary film with the greatest positive impact on society. For too long the value of our oceans has been overlooked. The success of the film – and the appetite of audiences to make a difference- inspired George Duffield and I (the film’s producers) to set up BLUE – now a UK registered charity. We are young but determined. We are developing all sorts of new and exciting solutions to fix the crisis in the oceans by establishing marine reserves – think of them as marine national parks. Over 70% of our planet is water and yet only 1% is under any kind or protection. In our first year we doubled the amount of ocean under full protection by enabling the creation of the largest marine reserve in the world in the breathtaking Chagos Archipelago. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.
The oceans are the planet’s life support system, they are home to over 80% of life on earth, they provide breathable air and are a vital source of food for billions of people. Life as we know it depends on the protection of the oceans’ intricate and vulnerable ecosystems and yet we are decimating them.
Overfishing is the single biggest threat to the world’s oceans today; its effects are global and terrifying. Techincal advances within the fishing industry have meant that within the space of a human lifetime it has become possible to catch virtually any creature in the oceans. As Dr Daniel Pauly says in the EOTL film “We (humans) are fighting a war against fish and we are winning“. If we continue to plunder the oceans at current rates, we will drive all the world’s major stocks of commercial fish to the point of collapse by the middle of this century.
In June 2010, 250 leading scientists called for the establishment of a worldwide network of highly protected marine reserves as ‘an essential and long overdue contribution to improving stewardship of the global oceanic environment.’
Our ten-year plan underpins all that we do. The delivery will vary depending on where we are working but essentially we focus on setting up and managing sustainable marine reserves. We do this by working on many different levels, with all levels of society – from governments to fishermen, from business to other charities. We raise awareness using social media and inspirational stories told through film. We also raise critical funding through philanthropic and corporate sources in order to kick-start projects.
The relationship with Orlebar Brown is a great example of a like-minded young and dynamic organisation joining us in our mission to raise funds, awareness and engage everyone in solving this issue.
In our view, BLUE is the new green! We aim to increase the amount of ocean under active and effective protection from the present figure of just over 1% to 10% over the next ten years. We do so by developing exciting and innovative solutions and partnerships for the sea. With the help of our amazing global ambassadors such as Sienna Miller, Stephen Fry and champion kite surfer Alex Caizergues BLUE aims to inspire the global public to believe that environmental problems can be solved.
There are currently a range of projects under development that span the globe from Antarctica, to the Maldives, to Southern England and the Caribbean. They are being developed with local and national governments, corporations and local communities. One of most exciting recent projects we’ve embarked upon is in collaboration with Fondation Prince Albert II of Monaco with whom we are working closely to reach the yachting community – the very people who love the sea and have the ability to change the course of its future.
The oceans are ours – under UN law, they belong to all of us, so we ask you to get involved.
You can help us with our work by donating to BLUE and encourage others to do the same. Follow us on facebook and twitter.
Also, ask before you eat; make sure your seafood comes from sustainable sources. Fish2Fork is a great place to start, it’s Blue’s partner organisation and is the first ever online restaturant guide to review restaurants based on sustainability as well as how it tastes.
