BEHIND THE PHOTO

OB: Where was the photo taken exactly?

AG: The shot was taken from a hotel rooftop restaurant overlooking the mid-section of Ipanema beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

OB: When was the photo taken?

AG: I believe it was taken on 15th January 2012.

OB: What it is you like about the photo?

AG: As soon as I arrived in Rio, it was clear that this place is all about ‘the beach’ – That’s where you’ll find the heartbeat of the city. I think this photo captures that heartbeat. The view reminded me of a ‘Where’s Wally’ illustration, and I love the way that you can notice something different captured in the image every time you look at it. It’s also the kind of shot that seems to have it’s own soundtrack – When I look at it, I’m instantly back there sipping a fresh coconut water from one of the beachside vendors against the backdrop of the muted hustle and bustle of the beach.

OB: Why do you feel it represents an OB Way of Life

AG: For me the photo reveals many aspects of the relaxed Brazilian way of life – from the couple smooching, to the classic beach volleyball match, to families gathering for a day out, to the groups of young lads posing. When I was there, a local said to me ‘In England you have the parks. In Brazil the beach is our park’ and that’s what it feels like to me, a diverse snapshot of Brazilian life. This clearly led me onto thinking that this could be a valid image to define the OB way of life, after all, nobody does beachwear like the Brazilians!

OB: How did you go about taking the photograph and what camera did you use?

AG: It was taken on a Canon EOS 350D Digital Camera using a 75.0-300.0 zoom lens.
