The postcard has always been synonymous as a means of communication whilst away on holiday. The image on the front of a postcard is central to that sense of fun, discovery, escape or relaxation. In recent years, the function of the postcard may have been surpassed by more modern alternatives, but to us it remains a timeless icon that still conjures up a feeling of good times.
The first postcard was supposedly sent by Englishman Theodore Hook back in 1840,when he dispatched a card with caricatures of post office workers to himself as a joke. As the postal service became more efficient, postcards soon became very popular by the middle of the 19th century.
By the turn of the century, pictures had been introduced onto the front of postcards. This preceded the “Golden Age of Postcards” in the 1890s, when states allowed private publishers to print postcards. Popular motifs in those early days included the Eiffel tower and the Columbian Exhibition of Chicago, but also celebrities, landmarks, tourist attractions and the like.
English humour found it’s way on to postcards during the 1930s when the so called “Saucy Postcards” became successful. Most were cartoons featuring married men, getting caught in compromising positions or situations with some beach side beauty.
To celebrate our fifth anniversary, using imagery from the archives of Getty Images, we have created a series of 18 postcards that celebrate An OB Way of Life.
