Land Rover Defender

Launched in 1948 as an agricultural and utility vehicle inspired by the US Army Jeep, the Land Rover has come to symbolize four wheel drive off-road vehicles at their best.

Production of the model now known as the Defender began in 1983, and its distinctive, boxy design remains uncompromisingly utilitarian, eschewing comfort and aesthetics in favour of practicality, robustness and versatility. As such it is a rarity in commercial automotive design. The Defender’s reputation was forged around the world as much through military deployment as ferrying sheep and towing cars.

It is assembled by hand, and all major body parts bolt together, meaning it can be stripped down to its chassis and modified with basic tools. This functional approach to design is at the core of the Defender’s enduring appeal.

But after a quarter of a century virtually without change, the Defender has been scheduled for replacement in 2015, which will mean the end of the road for a British design classic.
