Alex Maclean - Aerial Photography

Alex Maclean’s viewpoint on the world is a little different to most peoples. A trained architect and pilot, his incredible aerial photography documents evolving landscapes of human expansion and ecological events. We’ve selected three of our favourite of Maclean’s most spectacular images for OB Editions this season. Our classic Bulldog shorts feature a flamboyance of flamingos, surfers riding the waves and beach spotted with sun-seeking tourists.

Alex MacLean talks us through his most striking images:

Flamingo’s taking flight

“I was working on a commission from the Berlin Academy of Arts, doing a comparative survey of Venice, Italy and Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The unlikely comparison was based on viewing the impacts of climate change. With one city having too much water, and the other not enough. While I was flying over the Venice lagoon, I looked down and saw a white pillow-like pattern of hundreds of floating flamingoes on the water. As I moved closer, there was an explosion of wings as the flamingos lifted off into flight. I could hardly believe the instantaneous transformation of what I was looking at.”

Surfers Behind Breaking Waves at Sunset Beach

“I was in Hawaii working on a commission in Waikiki. While I was there, I made a flight around the island of Oahu and came across the surfers at Sunset Beach. It was a matter of timing and finding an angle to capture the surfers on breaking waves. While I was circling above, in a way, I felt like the surfers below, waiting for the perfect wave.”

Open Beach

“I received a commission from the National Museum of the XXI Century for an exhibition called Italian Atlas 2007: Landscape at Risk, a Portrait of a Changing Italy. My theme was looking at consumer tourism. This commission brought me to both the east and west Italian coastlines. On both coasts during the summer months, there is an amazing out-pouring of people to the coastline. Here in Rosignano Marittimo, the water was an unusual intense azure blue against the white sands.”
